Youth Action Committee at our Community Foundation
You don't want to wait until adulthood to make a difference. We respect that.
What is YAC?
The Youth Action Committee (YAC) is an advisory committee of our Community Foundation. YAC grants money through the Foundation to fund and promote programs that help youth in Ingham, Clinton and Eaton counties. Members are 13 to 18 years old and represent 16 high schools throughout the tri-county area.
Last year, YAC granted more than $41,000 to nonprofit organizations in Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties.
YAC also participates in ongoing community service projects such as working at a food distribution center, serving meals at a soup kitchen and hosting holiday parties for foster children. Through their activities, YAC members learn about volunteerism, philanthropy and community service.
A history of rising to the challenge
Youth action committees began in the 1990s when the W.K. Kellogg Foundation issued a challenge to Michigan community foundations: Raise $2 for unrestricted endowment funds and Kellogg would give $1 to a youth endowment fund so teens could give grant money forever. Today, the collective assets of Michigan's youth funds are nearly 40 million and the funds provide $2.5 million to Michigan communities every year.
